OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is a term that can mean different things in different industries.
For instance, in some cases, an OEM is a company that resells a product that another company manufactured.
What Are OEM Wheels?
When it comes to wheels, an OEM piece is a replacement that is actually made by the original manufacturer. Most cars contain pieces that are manufactured by many different companies. For example, one company might make the engine while a completely different company makes the frame.
This isn’t something that should alarm you, however, as it’s been a practice for decades. In fact, very few car companies make many of the parts themselves. This is also true in other industries. Companies that market and sell smartphones, for example, usually make none, or very few of the parts in the end product.
Car companies usually participate in the manufacturing or design at some level, of course, but it is a much more cost-effective method to leave design and manufacturing to other parties.
When it comes to wheels, this is a very common practice. Wheels from almost any sedan are interchangeable with most other cars in that class. It wouldn’t make much sense for a car company to pay a designer, engineer, and laborers to make custom wheels for each model.
Ultimately, an OEM wheel is just a wheel that has been produced by the company that originally manufactured the wheels on a given car.
Why Purchase OEM Wheels?
Of course, OEM rims are not the only option. There are many brands that make wheels that will fit whatever car you drive, after all. Why would you purchase an OEM wheel?
There are a few important considerations. First, perhaps your car was damaged in an accident or by a poorly maintained road. In this case, you might only need to replace one or two wheels, and not the entire set. It would be better for your car while also being more cost effective to purchase OEM wheels for the ones that need to be replaced.
Not only would it be unattractive to have wheels that don’t match, it could also cause problems for the car’s suspension in the future. Depending on circumstances, a mismatch could also cause your tires to deteriorate more quickly.
Why Purchase another Brand’s Wheels?
If OEMs work well and are inexpensive, why might you want to purchase a wheel from another manufacturer?
There are two primary reasons you might choose to purchase something other than an OEM wheel. The first reason is aesthetics. Other companies that manufacture wheels often place an emphasis on style. These other brands make wheels in many colors and looks. If you’re looking to improve the appearance of your car, you might look at other brands.
Second, you might choose to purchase a wheel that is not made by the original manufacturer to improve performance. Whether you want your car to accelerate or decelerate more quickly or save money on fuel, purchasing lighter wheels can make a big difference.
