Caversham is a modern suburb of Reading, which sits in the Royal County of Berkshire. Until 1911, Caversham had been a part of the county of Oxfordshire, but it was transferred to become part of Reading because of its proximity. The town is mostly residential but old enough to have appeared in the Doomsday Book, which mentions it has a sizeable community. There is a record that Catherine of Aragon visited Caversham in July of 1532 to take the healing properties of the chapel of St. Anne.
The Caversham Bridge, which crosses the River Thames, carrying the A4155 roadway saw some serious fighting during the Civil War in 1643. Reading had been overtaken and held by the Royalists, who had marched south from the city of Oxford, to relieve the defenders. They fought bravely but fell to the Parliamentarians a few days after that.
Caversham has strong links with the BBC who occupy Caversham Park with their monitoring services, as well as the World Service. However it is also the home of the written BBC archives centre and BBC radio Berkshire. Caversham Park replaced the Manor House in the sixteenth century and included the home of the 1st Earl Cadogan.
Residential Paradise
Because the town of Caversham is generally a residential town there are very few commercial structures. However, there is quite a healthy property market, despite current lapses and the work of conveyancers in Caversham continues regardless. The Chiltern Hills are huge pull for many people wanting a country retreat or home in the suburbs but close enough to civilization and this keeps the property markets reasonably healthy for both buyers and renters. During the 1960’s Caversham Park Village was developed to increase the housing capacity in the town. However, until 1977 the small village of just fifteen hundred homes remained in Oxfordshire. The boundaries changed and Caversham Park Village became incorporated into Reading. Reading is a unitary authority and is responsible for every aspect of all the local government issues.
The Royal County of Berkshire can boast quite a few famous local places, such as Windsor Castle one of the great landmarks of southern England, along with the Royal Ascot Race course, the new Town of Bracknell and of course the old and ancient town of Windsor.
