Sponge Rubber
Sponge silicone rubber has tiny holes or cells like real sponges. In fact, it’s manufactured to resemble sponge material. This creates a synthetic sponge rubber that’s very strong, durable, and elastic. It also resists heat and once compressed, regains much of its original thickness. Sponge rubber gaskets are often used in outdoor applications because they resist the effects of ultraviolet light and moisture.
Foam
Foam and sponge custom silicone gasket applications are similar, but not the same. Foam is produced in either open or closed cell processes. A closed cell process creates a lot of elasticity and resistance to water. Open cell manufacturing produces gaskets that allow liquids to pass through yet they still seal against air. Closed cell foam resists both moisture and air and offers greater thermal resistance (insulating properties). However, foam doesn’t resist tearing as well as sponge rubber.
Solid Gaskets
When you need seals that can withstand moisture penetration under water, solid silicone gaskets are the best choice. Some materials are much harder than others depending on their density. Solid silicone is easy to mold and can resist both cold and hot temperatures. However, because they’re not as soft and pliable as foam or sponge, solid gaskets may not seal as well. Yet, they work very well in the applications they’re designed for.
