India has gained appreciation from the world for incredible success in fighting against polio. Two drops of polio vaccine have brought this success. Poliomyelitis or polio can be caused by an infection having any of the three strains of poliovirus. This virus can live for 6 weeks and mostly it spreads through foods, water, and hands contaminated with faces or throat secretions of someone who has been infected by the virus. It weakens the immune systems and legs of affected children. Doctors often recommend calipers for weak legs.

How to diagnose polio?

A doctor often considers the medical history of a patient and conducts a physical test when a few symptoms are there, such as neck and back stiffness, unusual reflexes, difficulties in swallowing and breathing. Once the test is done, the doctor will be able to understand what is causing the symptoms. Sometimes, a detailed test can be further performed to confirm the attack of poliovirus. non

In 2011, only one case of polio was detected in India. Though India has wiped out polio, it is important to be aware as it may again come and spread through the foreigners coming from polio-affected countries to India. Moreover, India is still fighting against malnutrition that weakens different body parts and legs. Therefore, foundations and NGOs should keep supplying calipers for the weak legs of children in the different parts of the country.

Malnutrition is still a burning issue

India’s fight has not ended with polio. Still, the country is struggling against children’s malnutrition. NDTV has reported that 33 lakh children in India are malnourished and over 50% of cases are serious. Many of these children are unable to walk due to the weakening of their legs. Poverty is the main reason behind such cases.

Along with supplying calipers for weak legs, non-profitable organisations should also supply food and medicines to nourish the children properly. After all, these children are the pillar of Future India.
