What is SPF roofing in Oklahoma City? SPF is “Sprayed Polyurethane Foam” which, when the roofing project starts is just two liquid chemicals, an isocyanate and a polyol resin. During the application process these two materials are mixed in a ratio of 1:1 and its then, and only then that the foam is formed, expanding by 20 or 30 times the original volume. The result is a roof that is fully adhered, seamless and closed cell which assures a watertight roof that also has excellent thermal insulating ratings.

So the answer is “Yes”, SPF roofing in Oklahoma City is a good idea. As it can be applied over nearly every other roofing surface it saves a great deal of time and money because the old roof does not have to be removed and disposed of. As the mechanics of sprayed polyurethane foam can be harnessed, a slight taper or cant can be built in during application. This absolutely eliminates the need for an expensive insulation system which has to be tapered by hand. When the application is complete, the self flashing properties make the entire roof one homogeneous system.

How Is SPF Roofing In Oklahoma City Applied?

The A and B components, arrive at the job site in unique 55 gallon drums. After going through a heating process, the materials meet in the spray gun where they form foam. The foam is applied in passes, with each pass between a half inch and one inch thick. A number of passes are required to build the roof thickness to its desired dimension. This can often be several inches and the passes allow for the creation of the slope which eliminates standing water.

As SPF roofing is susceptible to the effects of UV, a protective coating is applied over the finished foam. The coating is elastic as it has to be able to stretch and return to neutral with the foam. The coatings are normally sprayed on a can be urethane, acrylic or similar materials. To enhance the fire protection rating and to aid in warding off physical damage, granular material is often mixed with the over-coat.

When completed, the roof will provide many years of stellar performance. They can take pedestrian traffic as well as nay roof. The word foam often conjures up the idea of a soft material like the cushions in your chairs at home. SPF is far from that. Although it starts as foam, within moments of its application, it sets up to a very hard and durable surface.

As Oklahoma is in “Tornado Alley”, it must be inspected at least twice a year for any damage that may have been caused by flying debris or hail stones. Usually any damage less than about four inches can be repaired with polyurethane caulk, anything larger should be repaired by the professionals who did the original installation.
