We recently received a service call request to correct two problems our client was experiencing with their refrigerator ice maker/water dispenser: Poor water pressure and very warm water inlet temperature.

Upon completing a careful diagnostic survey, we discovered the previous (unlicensed) installer used a saddle-tee fitting in direct violation of the Illinois Plumbing Code.

Also in violation of the Illinois Plumbing Code, he connected the ice maker water supply directly to the basement boiler! Clearly the boiler is not meant to supply domestic drinking water. Many boilers contain harmful toxic treatment chemicals, unfit for human consumption. Also, because it was a low-pressure boiler, this accounted for the noticeably poor water pressure.

First, we carefully removed the illegal saddle tee and capped it. Next, we re-piped the ice-maker/water dispenser per code and not the homeowner can enjoy a nice glass of safe, clean, cold water in far less than a minute!
