There are a number of different materials available that are applicable to bathroom flooring, each has advantages and disadvantages that need to be considered. The most common types of bathroom flooring are carpet, wood, vinyl, ceramic and stone tile.

Stone tiles are very elegant when used for a bathroom floor but of all the common flooring available, stone is by far the most expensive. Some stones floors can be quite slippery when wet and cold to the touch. Most homeowners that do elect stone floors use slate as the rough texture helps in preventing slips and falls. In lieu of stone many people prefer ceramic, this type of flooring is ideal especially if it is not glazed as glazed surfaces can be slippery when wet. Ceramic tiles come in a vast assortment of sizes and colours and can be used on both the floors and the walls.

Vinyl floors are a good choice for the budget conscious buyer but the adhesive will often fail when it is wet and as a result the flooring will lift over time. Vinyl tiles can be laid by the homeowner but sheet vinyl is something that should be left to a professional as it can be tricky to cut perfectly. Vinyl is not the most glamorous floor available but there are many colours and patterns readily available.

With water being the number one enemy of bathroom floors, carpet is the worst possible choice. Even if the carpet is manufactured for outdoor use there will always be the problem of hygiene in the area of the toilet. While germs and bacteria can be removed from a hard surface floor, they get trapped in the carpet pile and pose a considerable problem. If the home is put on the market many potential buyers will be turned off as they are aware of the issues. A far better choice if you want a warm surface to stand on is to purchase bathroom mats which have a non-slip backing; when these are soiled they can simply be laundered.

Wood can be used in bathrooms in Wiltshire but it must be hard wood rather than soft. Even with hardwood any water should be mopped up quickly. A high quality hardwood floor, perhaps oak or maple with a protective coating of polyurethane helps considerably to resist water but even at that wood may warp over time.
