One of the keys to a smoothly operating transmission is the right steel clutch plates. You may notice that something is off with your transmission, but may not be able to identify the source of the problem. When you check your transmission, be sure to have a look at the clutch plates or bands that move power evenly through the transmission. The plates are located next to disks that are covered with a coating and clutch onto the plates. The plates and disks are stacked to form the transmission. A hydraulic piston puts pressure on the system and causes the disks to grasp the steel plates. If there is a malfunction with the disks or plates, the transmission fails to operate, even with the help of hydraulic pressure.

What to Look for in the Clutch Plates

To work properly, steel clutch plates should have intact material with grooves carved into the surface to help with heat control. Simply looking at the plate enables you to tell whether a plate needs replacing. If the grooves are rubbed away or if the material is not intact, the clutch plates could rub against the disk in a steel-on-steel combination that creates friction. The result is a malfunction of the transmission.

How to Fix Your Transmission

If your steel clutch plates are losing their grove, it is time to replace them or, if there is considerable damage, buying a new transmission unit. Some prefer to replace the clutch plates themselves, and for do-it-yourself replacement, it is important to be sure that you have the right type of clutch plates for your transmission. Look for clutch sets that have all of the components you need and are made of high energy materials that withstand extreme temperatures and create the proper engagement between the plates and the disks. You may consider purchasing some spares in case you need them.
