With the number of vehicles on the road and the poor condition of many of them, it comes as no surprise to motorists that the windshield in their car sustains damage. In the past, any chips or cracks to a windshield automatically meant that it had to be replaced, that is no longer the case. Depending on the extent of the damage and the location, it may be possible to repair damage to auto glass in Chicago, returning the windshield to its “as new” condition.
There is a fine line between being able to repair the damage and having to replace the windshield.
Act fast:
Small chips, those no larger than a quarter and cracks that are no longer than the width of a dollar bill can usually be repaired, but it is important that you act fast. It doesn’t take long for the effects of dust, rain and pollution to get in and under the top layer of glass, when this happens, it is impossible to clean it. If you get to the auto glass repair shop early enough the technicians can inject resin into the fissure, hardening it with UV light. Once polished it is virtually impossible to see the damage.
Chips and cracks are a safety hazard:
Although it may look like, auto glass in Chicago is not a single sheet; it is actually two layers of glass separated by a layer of PVB, polyvinyl butyral. Windshields are manufactured like this for a number of very important reasons:
In the event the windshield is impacted, it will not shatter; the small pellets of glass will be held together by the layer of PVB.
A windshield does far more than protect the vehicle occupants from wind, rain, debris, etc. A windshield is actually an important safety component of the vehicle, without it the airbag will not deploy properly in the event of an accident and should the vehicle roll over, it provides structural rigidity.
